Arabica
☕ Arabica coffee has a sweeter and fruitier taste and is more aromatic.
☕ The grains are less dense.
The grains are characteristically elongated with an S-shaped fissure.
Arabica coffee has a higher quality and also a higher price.
It has a caffeine concentration of maximum 1.7%, lower than robusta coffee.
It is produced mainly in Colombia, Brazil and Ethiopia.
It accounts for 60 - 70% of world production.
☕ It is cultivated in areas between 600 and 2000 metres above sea level.
Robusta
Robusta coffee has a stronger, earthier, woodier and more bitter taste.
It has a 2.5% concentration of caffeine, which is what makes it taste more bitter.
☕ The grains are rounded, with a straight fissure and yellowish in colour.
Robusta coffee has a lower quality and a cheaper price.
It is mainly produced in Vietnam, Indonesia and Uganda.
It accounts for 30-40% of world coffee production.
☕ It is cultivated in areas between 0 and 800 metres above sea level.
☕ It is often used to make soluble coffees.
Mix
If you are still undecided which one to choose, you can always opt for a mix of the two.
This ensures that you keep all the sweet and fruity taste of arabica coffee and add the extra caffeine and higher cream content of robusta coffee.
